Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about how Waypoint Navigator works, what it needs, and how your data is handled.
Is Waypoint Navigator free?
Yes. The web app is completely free to use. It is supported by unobtrusive advertising on the informational pages of this site.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no login. Just open the app and start navigating. Your waypoints and settings are stored locally in your own browser.
Is my location data private?
Yes. Your position is read by your browser and used only on your device to calculate distances and bearings. We do not collect, store, or transmit your location or your saved routes. See our privacy policy for details.
How accurate is it?
Accuracy depends on your device's GPS hardware and your surroundings. Outdoors with a clear view of the sky, most modern phones are accurate to within a few meters. Accuracy degrades indoors, in dense forest, or among tall buildings, just as it does in any GPS app.
What is the difference between heading and bearing?
Heading is the direction you are currently facing or moving. Bearing is the direction from your position to your destination. When your heading matches the bearing, you are pointed straight at your target.
What is the course deviation indicator (CDI)?
The CDI is a needle, borrowed from aviation instruments, that shows how far you are to the left or right of the straight line between your starting point and your destination. Keeping it centered means you are walking, sailing, or flying directly along the intended track rather than drifting around it.
Can I import my existing waypoints?
Yes. You can import waypoints from GPX or CSV files, and export your data the same way. This lets you move routes between devices or prepare them on a computer.
Does it work offline?
The GPS, compass, and navigation math work without a connection. However, the background map tiles are streamed online, so the map view needs internet to load new areas. The numeric navigation instrument continues to function offline.
Which devices and browsers are supported?
Any modern browser with location support works — Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox on phones, tablets, and laptops. A device with a magnetometer is needed for compass heading while stationary; otherwise heading is derived from movement.
Is there a mobile app?
Yes, there is an Android version on the Google Play Store with the same privacy-first design.
